However the readers may know of someone who may need some help - Just put them in touch via E MAIL

Inspiring people - Improving places

- Posted in the daily “Burton Joyce Blog” in the latter part of last year twere a couple of postings describing the adverse appearance of the Old School grounds located in the most significant spot within B J Village centre.

The historic School Building and adjacent grounds is currently the base for the BTCV an organisation committed to Inspiring people - Improving places. Their stated aim is graphically publicised on the Organisation’s vehicles.

Why is it then, that the organisation has little or no pride in its own “home” ? Why is it they do not try a little harder here on their own doorstep? Why is it that from as early as the middle of last year, these grounds have been allowed to deteriorate ?. Yes, even if of late, there has been some effort to improve the situation, why is it that shrub and hedge cuttings/rubbish are left around in heaps.Why is it that the run-down hideous prefabricated “classroom”, which should have been demolished or replaced for some time now, is not given the attention it (together with the straggly shrubs presumably left to hide the eye-sore) and the village deserve.

Is there any pressing reason why this BTCV area cannot be open to the BJ village community to enjoy and pass time of the day, particularly in the nice weather ? It could also improve the frontage area of the School ( presumably part of the old playground area) if several collections of plants/flowers in containers could be included to create more colour and generally improve this bland and stark area.

Our village deserves a more caring attitude yet why should an organisation which openly promotes itself as Inspiring people - Improving places actually be blind to its own environment

This project is entirely, community based and non-profit making. It is presently being developed and created for launching very shortly at http://www.burtonjoyceonline.co.uk/

The project has been created to improve and develop further village communication and assist in establishing an “all-inclusive, all participating” community. The development, maintenance, updating and ongoing administration of the project will be administered by and with the existing experienced (internet/website) ownerThis new and dedicated Community website is owned and operated by myself .

Together with my wife, we have lived in Burton Joyce continuously since 1971, operating our own business during the greater period of this time.We committed ourselves to retirement several years ago.

Over the last 3 years, the vast majority of our time has been spent on leisure pursuits and researching our family history. This has revealed that our family originally came to Burton Joyce in the mid 1600’s and appears to have had a presence and served the village continually from that time - as Farmers , Land owners , Blacksmiths, Shop owners, Stockingers and Hosiery Bagmen Motor repairs, Parish Clerk, Verger, etc.

We intend perpetuating this community service by developing and the ongoing administration of the Burton Joyce Online community project

Mission Statement - Project aims, challenges and content

Aims -The Burton Joyce Online community project will have facilities which are freely available to Burton Joyce Village at large, to the Parish Council, Churches, Schools, Charities, Groups, organisations, minor interest groups, services etc ., in fact any to any B J organisation with legitimate and bone-fide interests.
The content within Burton Joyce Online will always be free of all political, colour, class or creed bias and will be accessible by all who have the capability and will to access the www/internet. , which today, is the majority of our community ( in the future, this will inevitably increase percentage-wise and in actual numbers)

CONFUSED

For those of you who have been following my Blogs both here and at http://www.burtonjoyceblog.blogspot.com/ you will be aware that for the last 4 to 5 months I have been “blogging” on about numerous subjects which have influence on our community and individual lives. .

Over the next months I am reasonably sure that I will be blogging and visiting them again. However, my current subject is fresh and stimulated by my thoughts on the possible future use of “The GROVE.”.

Whilst considering the subject, I did recall that a couple of months ago one of our Parish Councillors was delegated with investigating the matter and seeking possible funding. At that time, it was decided that the opinion and suggestions of the community would be sought for consideration.. Some time later I believe the PC provisionally concluded that the GROVE area should be developed and used for the relaxation and reflections of the B J residents ( I am not too sure of the precise wording, however it is something along these lines) .

I would like to learn HOW and WHAT influenced and persuaded the PC to proceed in this particular direction.. .. .. . Now don’t get me wrong - I do not necessarily disagree with PC decision , however, I do question the mechanism used to arrive at this decision. I personally do not recall - EVER - being consulted by the PC or any individual Councillor on subjects or decision taken by the PC..- where is the “Open” administration promised at election time. I am also particularly interested in the huge negative effect the “Poplars Playing Field “ has on the PC budget.

The PC minutes promised a review of the subject - uumh !!!!.

Once again let me say that I admire and respect tremendously all those giving their time for the administration and betterment of their community. However, I do question the apparent, ineffectual mechanisms, they use to provide and present the OPEN administration promised.

Finally let me say that .. NO! I have never got up off my backside and attended a PC meeting, nor have I telephoned a councillor to express my views.

However, YES ! I have e mailed one of our councillors at County Hall and YES, he has answered my mail on several occasions AND as a result has spoken with me . - Thanks Councillor O’Riordan.

Councillors and representative should realise the majority of our community hesitates to contact verbally, for like myself they hesitate and dislike confrontation. Confrontation, particularly with officialdom usually involves some inevitable intimidation, for the majority of officialdom have the experience and expertise to intimidate us, the less informed - More frequently than not they usually avoid direct and relevant responses even to the most simplest of direct questions - ( Ala -Parliamentary Question Time & TV Interviews) very frequently and all too often with an unjustified arrogance. - Not every contact is like this, however it should never be so

Communication via e-mail is now much more acceptable and convenient.

Unfortunately our Parish Councillors, do not have, or choose not to publicise, an e-mail address.. .. Surely even if they want to ensure privacy for their personal e-mail address, they can quite easily offer direct/personal e-mail contact via a Parish Council list of official yet individual Councillor e-mail addresses

Aah! well let us see what 2009 brings

WHAT IS and Who are the members of a LOCAL FORUM?

Anyone from a local area who wants to make a difference and can contribute time, money, advice and expertise to a partnership

Forums bring together local councillors, businesses, colleges, health, police, churches, community groups and anybody else who can help make their local area a better place to live.

What does a Local Area Forum do?

Each "Local Area Forum" is different and has grown in response to local needs and local issues, but they all have the same aims:

To work with local people to improve their quality of life
To take action to tackle local issues
To influence plans and services for the area and make sure they are what people want
To raise money for local projects
To bring together all those who live and work in an area in a positive and active partnership.

What appears to be a disadvantage of a Local Area Forum? -
In my view -they carry the tag "OFFICIALDOM"

Residents in the any community can and do become quite sceptical of "OFFICIALDOM"

and why should we in B J ever consider the formation of a FORUM

NEVER! . for we have our own elected PARISH COUNCIL

Some chance many of you will retort !

Especially with the World’s Economic Crisis overshadowing most everyone and everything. So now is the time for us to pull together as a community and look after our own .
-
Here is my suggestion, hope and endeavour for 2009.

As you will begin to realise “my glass is always half full - never, never half empty “.

I would therefore be “Chuffed” to see a genuine, cohesive, caring, all embracing community here in our village . A community that is more aware of the plight of others less fortunate than themselves, an awareness with true empathy of all groups and minorities throughout the total age spectrum of B J

We will all have our individual and pet endeavours mine is the improvement of the social lives of the “Silver Heads” amongst us. So much talent and knowledge is “tied up” and lying semi-dormant in this sector of our community, I want to free and release much of this for the benefit and interest of others -

What a load of “twaddle” I can hear in the background .. .

OK! that’s fine with me, you are entitled to your own views, however, mine are somewhat different and more positive ( my glass is already half full ).

I believe that by creating a central

“ONE STOP SPOT “ a daily meeting place for all to gossip ,
spend some quality time, read daily papers, take the “weight of ones feet”
receive advise and suggestions relative to grants/benefits etc,
receive help with form “filling-in”
Have a warm tea, coffee or cold drink,
Yes! possibly learn to use the Internet,
hear and discuss daily events , news etc

I believe all of this is achievable, relatively easily, relatively quickly and economically, - by the broader use of the CARNARVON ROOMS . .. ..

Whooo ! Hold on! Many of you will certainly think and say.

Why not - will be my reply?

It is already used for other village affairs and yes occasionally for Hot Snacks (the proceeds going to a worth while cause ) Why can we not expand and broaden this facility - is it that there is not a need or simply to many amongst us “with a glass half empty”

Communication! Communication! Communication !

Last Saturday ( the 21st) we went down into the village centre for the annual Carol Service “sing-along”

There was approximate 100 individuals there , quite disappointing for a village of 4000.

I wondered why the attendance was so low, for it could be expected that over 50% of the number attending, would probably be the congregations of the 3 churches.

-
I respectfully suggest, that the answer may not be the indifference of the community to their participation in village activities and affairs.

No! My opinion is - the high probability of the "absence of an awareness" in the staging of event and activities within our village

This opinion is re-enforced by a limited census, I personally completed, over the last week, where I asked several questions of a "cross section" of B J individuals in the village centre

"Can you name a B J Parish Councillor?"
"Do you know what is happening to the B J Post Office?".
"Have you ever used or visited B J's Poplars Sports Field?"
"Did you attend at B J's Cenotaph this years Remembrance Day.? "
"Do you use or attend any of B J's Village Clubs, Groups, Societies or Halls"

The replies were both astounding, quite depressing, yet not altogether unexpected -

They confirmed and reinforced an opinion I have held for several months now. - Our Village Fathers, Administrators, Group and Society Officers should all quickly and dramically improve, implement the ongoing communication with our community developing an interest within ALL age groups of our community with their agendas, objectives and progress .

The Organisations and their officers should begin to adopt an aggressive/proactive, effective and "OPEN" communication programme ( broader and more frequent than is preswently existing ).

A communication programme which includes the information, useful and ALL embracing, to ALL Groups and Interests within our village community.

A Point Proven on this occasion ?

Maybe this year the Village Christmas lights were somewhat dissappointing.

However at least an effort was made . The crowd size also a little dissappointing - approx 100 out of a village with a 4000 population

Imagine that you are in a country thousands of miles away and you want to contact someone or a particular group organisation in Burton Joyce and you do not have a name, a particular contact, address, telephone - What would you do? How would you establish an approach.

Well assume you do have an e mail address and access to the www/Internet.

First of all you would “log on” to the Internet and enter search words ie Burton Joyce plus other relevant words ( family name, interest etc) in the search box, then wait a few seconds for the magic of the Search engines ( “Google” , “Live Search” “Yahoo” etc ) to do their work

You will now become confronted with page upon page of various results - sometimes relevant, sometimes not relevant, some of the results will be definitely “out of date” and of no use whatsoever, others mayl be of interest but of no immediate use to you. There will also be numerous listings of websites administrated by opportunistic operators who own sites with vague connections to Burton Joyce and be supplemented with commercial adverts

There may well not be a "search result" that answers your particular need. You may well decide that there is nothing or no one specific listing which answers your need, be it general, specific, genealogical, historical or social etc. This may in no way the result of your own shortcomings . or a lack of precise information -

“No” it is very likely the shortcoming is the in-ability, or more frequently the resistance, of the individuals in Burton Joyce to provide details to the Search Engines on the Internet as a world wide contact source.

I can accept that if there are issues of confidentiality (which over-ride all the obvious benefits of Internet communication) . However, I still cannot understand, why certain groups and individuals in Burton Joyce continue with their resistance and personal opposition to accepting the inevitable - the progress, benefits, and advantages available to all by embracing the www/Internet

I simply cannot understand the logic behind any resistance to accepting a modern communication facility such as the www/Internet which enables an individual to establish visual contact, send messages in text or audio to friends, relatives, business contacts, similar interest groups and establishments etc., etc..

This method of communication to and from ones own home or establishment to, anywhere in the world, which has an Internet access/service - is available NOW to everyone with access to a telephone.

Having www/Internet access, together with an e mail address, is tremendously useful to individuals and organisations, for it provide so many communication benefits and advantages . In my opinion and that of many other, the resistance to embracing this revolutionary communication medium shows a complete lack of social responsibility and a total mis-understanding of the benefits. The effective and widespread advantages which has already provided positive result to millions worldwide have been delivered by the www/Internet

OK ! Right! Now lets assume you live locally in Nottingham OR even here in Burton Joyce itself. I will wager that you become just as frustrated as I do when individuals or groups, almost within touching distance are difficult or even un-contactable - other than by physically treading the pavements of the village.

Why do I attempt, at this point in the development of the BURTON JOYCE ONLINE/BLOG chronicles, to explain the ETHOS of online “blogging” which is

The "FREE" transfer of knowledge and information .

A couple of months ago I chronicled certain activities which were taking place in the village on August Bank Holiday. As a direct a result, and after a long delay I received a one line e mail - from a fellow villager - the content chastised me over "their interpretation" of one of my Blog comments. I should add that the subject of the particular comment was not just the opinion of myself, but also that of a couple more villagers also - Yes! - it did involve a remark on finance .

I do admit that I frequently solicit other villagers’ opinions, views and comments on issues and events which occur in B J. However, in this instance it was not necessary, for these comments were freely offered and given to me, by a couple of villagers, out near the Co-op Car Park.

As a result of further and later apprehensions shown by others in our village I find the need and urgency to expand and explain once again

The “WWW - INTERNET ETHOS” . so here I go once again .. ;-)

Information, opinions and interests in local affairs - current, historical, genealogy and places of significance etc., can and should be freely offered, given, exchanged, investigated, queried, and used for free distributing and the development of knowledge -

After all, this has been happening for centuries - worldwide. - and importantly, where would the development of the human race/culture be otherwise. ? Mankind will always benefit greatfully when knowledge and information is freely distributed and given, ..

This is my opinion and that of the vast majority of everyday enthusiasts using the WWW -INTERNET

Let me give a further and local classic example of this unselfish "WWW - INTERNET ETHOS" .

The “Burton Joyce Virtual Reality/Interactive Tour” has been created, added online and administered by a fellow B J villager - his work at

is a comprehensive, non-commercial project which he independently created for the village.

This project is the result of his own initiative, created in his own time and at his own expense.

The "WWW- INTERNET ETHOS" at work! -

What an enlightened, generous and unselfish contribution for the community and local affairs. There are also many others thro-out the world, who also contribute, - everyday, to society and their own communities , with the very same ethos - Long may this attitude continued .. ..

Conventional means of publicising village information

Time for Change ? or the embracing of internet communication ?

When we first came to live in the village in 1971 ( some 38 years ago), the village appeared to be an idealand pleasant place to live . We quickly made friends, and enjoyed a social life created around our immediate neighbourhood, with others of like minds and expectations. This lifestyle continued for several years, until inevitably, one by one our friends “moved on”, due to a change in employment or circumstances.

Today in 2008 (almost 2009) we find ourselves, quite naturally, in vastly different times, obviously we are much older with revised values and mindsets. However, today the atmosphere in the village and its community, appears to be entrenched with an attitude of indifference, remoteness and insular protectionism. Groups, special interest bodies, committees, etc. all appear hesitant in welcoming/receiving new blood and ideas, and are frequently accompanied with the ever widening adverse attitude and lack of the normal courtesy .

Why is it that in B J there are some individuals and groups, who ought to be OPEN and receptive to fresh offers of help and constructive suggestions, appear to be receptive - INITIALLY - yet later become somewhat indifferent and at times quite evasive.?
Is it that for some possible selfish reason, ior their own activities somehow appear to be “threatened or challenged” by the newcomers and fresh ideas ? .. - .. POSSIBLY
We respectfully suggest that the “Village Fathers” take a fresh look at establishing the “ALL-INCLUSIVE and OPEN” community, which can be begin and assisted by an improved and more effective means communicating the village announcements, information etc, particularly for the elderly, the infirmed, the needy and less mobile amongst us .

How can we, as a community, improve the existing situation ? .. ..
One way is to improve the distribution and clarity of community information, supplementing the existing methods of posting infomation on Library and Village Centre Notice Boards and via printed magazines etc - is to use our BURTON JOYCE ONLINE project -( is free from any obligation, investment or ongoing cost) . This is facilty is available to all non-political, non-commercial groups and is available to INSTANTLY augment all existing conventional means of publicity, with a full and immediate online duplication of public notices and announcements - .. WHY YOU SHOULD "JOIN IN" - Burton Joyce Online

There is little doubt in my mind that generally the community spirit and interactivity of years gone by is no longer around.

Many of you may agree and point to the development of technology, mobile phones, the internet, easy travel etc. as well as individuals and families appearing to live more introvert lifestyles. Others will disagree strongly, I would be pleased to learn the arguments in support of your views.

However, what I consider is most important and is that we improve the distribution of community information and the individual awareness/participation in our village life, striving to embrace, restore and maintain an all inclusive society

Word of mouth , notice boards and printed publications all have a place in distributing information and should always be present within our community, however they do not, and cannot fully contribute the wider needs of a truly open society in today’s fast moving world.

In today’s society, the Internet is probably more widely used and read than any other single news/information source, certainly for the younger generation, who have grown up and been educated with the medium, are now well familiar and expertised with the use of computers, e mail, the www and mobile phones.

**The generation not fully and I stress not FULLY or at EASE ,with these newer communication techniques are, sections of the Mature and Silver Heads who are understandably hesitant with and when applying themselves to learning the use of these new technologies **

For all those who ARE comfortable with the new technologies, there now is the need to fill the space ONLINE with genuine local news, announcements and current affairs - which is the precise purpose of BURTON JOYCE ONLINE and the renewed reasoning behind developing the awareness of the project.

This project has been geminating for some 2 years now, with purposeful regular postings and really getting into its stride this last August . It has now progressed to a point where regular daily reports are the “norm” with - news, views, faces and places - serious, amusing, sometime contentious. I Dislike Cats !

"I DISLIKE CATS ! not just a little - a lot....

I also dislike THEIR OWNERS INDIFFERENCE TO them fouling the property of others

As a a child I suffered from asthma and on our GP's advise my parents gave away our family pets - dog and budgie, and began isolating me from anything "FURRY" ( which included animals of all kinds) thus I developed a phobia and aversion to them. I guess this is the underlying reason for my dislike.

However, as we lived in a rural area I became interested in birds and wild fowl ( remotely I should add) - which undoubtedly is my particular stand on this occasion

WHY is it that cat owners generally allow their pets unfettered freedom - to roam around their immediate area exercising their natural wild instincts - doing their “Number Twos”, marking out “THEIR TERRITORY !!” with “Number Ones” and honing their predatory skills, which invariably means STALKING, ATTACKING & "PLAYFULLY" KILLING !!, inferior sized animals, and other peoples non-predatory pets .

WHY is it, if and when, the cat or kitten does not return "home", that....

PHASE 1 - a Search Party - is organised, for the local vicinity. This is invariably accompanied by the standard and repetitive "Cooeee !" call and calling out of the pets name. If this search and the "Cooee-ing" fails, then..

PHASE 2 immediately swings into operation - COMPUTER PRINT OUTS - (together with cat/kitten image),- are now attached ( frequently with water-poof coverings). to trees, lamp posts, notice boards in Post Offices and the local Retail Stores , etc , requesting, nay pleading, for any information, sightings or the return of their treasured, home- loving family pet cat or kitten.

My question. is..... If the pet is happy and content at home, WHY do they choose NOT to return? Unless they in turn have been stalked, attacked and playfully killed by a larger, more aggressive and accomplished predator than themselves.. ???..!!!!!.

How do we know? about these regular roamings - security video footage.. ..our security lights are actuated every night with their presences - on their “hunting “ circuits. .. .. Every night as regular as clockwork - Now there is not only one cat (number1) ( a big black ugly monster) nor just two cats (number 2) ( a black and White - adult) but the now the latest addition ( number 3) ( - a young tabby).

Needless to say I am sick and tired of them all .. ..

Why is it that a supposedly happily and contented house pet is

TURNED OUT EACH NIGHT, free to roam and despoil neighbours property

Why is it that most cat owners are so enamoured with

“cuddly go anywhere - which suits them” pets.

(Pets with little or no allegience to anyone but themselves)

Another SHAMEFUL example of "OPEN" government

Secretary of State refused to delete the Gunthorpe allocation from the Minerals Plan

"Earlier this year we reported on Nottinghamshire County Council’s request to the Secretary of State that it be permitted to “save” (i.e. carry over) the Gunthorpe allocation after the official ending of the current Minerals Plan in December.

We led the objections to this request on the grounds of its proven unsuitability as a site for mineral extraction since Tarmac failed to solve the problems associated with mining on this site in spite of having its planning application on the table for over four years.

There were objections from local parish councils and our Members of Parliament – Vernon Coaker and Paddy Tipping – amongst others.Our MP – Vernon Coaker – asked for a meeting with the Government Office for the East Midlands (which acts for the Secretary of State in these matters) to discuss the matter but his request was refused.

GOEM / The Secretary of State ignored the overwhelming evidence against “saving” the site and has just announced that the site will be carried over until a new Minerals Plan is in place at some time in the distant future.

So the site will continue to blight all the communities around the site, as it has for the past six years."

B J Village Centre Anti Congestion Scheme

The following is a propposal which could have a positive effect on the traffic/parking congestions of B J village centre - occurring all too frequently !!

The SCHEME entails introducing ..

1) “Restricted Parking” along Main Street ( west ) - from Lambley Lane thro the village centre to Main Street (east ) -Wheatsheaf Pub Rear Car Park entrance.

2) Chestnut Grove - to be re-designated as “One Way” only ( out towards the Bye-Pass ) - Church Road.. Vehicle road sensors at the junction to activate new lights in Chestnut Grove at the Church Rd junction, together with synchronising the sequencing of the Traffic Lights on the Bye-Pass ( presently actuated only by pedestrians wanting to cross this road )

3) Meadow Lane - to be designated “One Way “ only ( into the village centre)

4) Padleys Lane - Parking restrictions well beyond the school entrance

5) Willow Wong - Parking restrictions well beyond the school entrance.

a)The “No Parking Restriction”, enforced between 8.00am and 4.00pm Monday to Friday, except for Permit Holding Residents ( Free to those who actually live within these areas) and Blue Badge Holders

b) If adopted the above scheme - the result will result in a significant ease to the daily congestion within the designated areas, producing a much safer environment for all pedestrians ( the “seniors” and “mums with toddlers” in particularly).

c) The scheme will also assist those wanting to exit the village “more safely” by introducing some control of their accessing the Bye-Pass.

d)The scheme will also introduce some calming and breaks into the heavy continual traffic flow, along the Bye-Pass by introducing an increase in the number of Traffic light actuations (presently only achieved by pedestrians crossing the Bye-Pass traffic flow )

e)The only individuals actually “inconvenienced” by the introduction of the scheme, will be to those who constantly use their cars for the “School Run” and park indiscriminately, -without a thought for the possible consequences ,within the village centre.. Surely the introduction of the suggestion, will persuade them to think twice about using their cars for the short inner village journey. Even if the scheme does not deter them and they consider driving still preferable to walking, they can choose the alternative parking possibility of using the Cross Keys/ Wheat Sheaf / Co-op Parks - as can those who will have longer journeys .

This scheme can be a WIN/WIN situation for the village .. Dont you agree?

School Run

B J Primary School Run

First of all let me make it clear I do not live an either of the two roads ( Padleys Lane and Willow Wong), providing access to Burton Joyce Primary School, nor do I live in Main Street in the village centre.

I do frequently walk and drive our car up/down “Padleys” at times which occasionally coincide with parents taking/collecting their children from the school - toddlers as well as the above 5’s. -

The problem is not simply the parking in front and on the frontage of the local residents, it is the car movements up and down the roads creating confusion and bottle necks ( particularly at the bend in “Padleys” which coincides with one of the school entrances.-

I must add here that the School in their website, ask for some co-operation , having negotiated with the car parks at the Co-op and Cross Keys which does not appear to have helped all that much -

The problems on Padleys - aggravated further with the fashionable introduction of the “Chelsea Tractors ( large 4 wheel drives ) are

1) Parking on both sides of and the corner junction of Main Street/ Padleys

2) Parking on the lower section of Padleys Lane in front of resident properties (and occasionally drive-ways

3) Parking creating safety and bottle-necks problems at the difficult, semi- obscured road bend in Padleys, adjacent - to the school entrance

4) Parking on the grass verges in “Padleys” close the to obscured bend- creating hazards for children and parents crossing behind/in front of cars (parked and moving)

5) Congestion in both direction of “Padleys” as cars arrive and depart simultaneously at the school - at least 4X a day/ 5 days week ( up to 150M of lower “Padleys”)

6) Parents gossiping and congesting the pavements for normal/elderly pedestrians before/after collecting their own children

7) “Unobserved” young children and toddlers not responsibly tended chasing around excitedly whilst parent chat of prepare opening car doors and boots

8) Cars parked with wheels on the pavements

9) Car doors opening onto the pavement areas and more importantly into the carriageway - creating yet further difficulties and congestion for other road and pavement users

10) Cars parked opposite and on each side of the road within Padleys
11) Of course all these probems are further aggrevated by the weather - rain, frost and snow create their own contribution to the difficulties--Etc.. etc.. --

-It should be added that the School Run “parking problem” experienced by local residents is not quite as bad in "Willow Wong"

However, the problem does exist in "Willow Wong" and elsewhere,

Roadside congestions in the village centre and in Meadow Lane ( which create difficulties outside of the Library and at the Church Road ( Bye-Pass) junction,

All these really do need attention and remedial action

Another COLD winters day in B J

Is this Shameful ?

Why is it that Gordon Brown, in his speeches constantly uses the personal “I” in his phrases ie. “ I want “ “I will do” “ I can see” “I have “ “ I think”. Does he not realise, nor accept that that although he is currently our un-elected Prime Minister, it is not HIM (singularly and personally) responsible for governing and administrating our Parliament democracy.

He should not be personally/solely responsible for allocating our taxes as expenditures - financing wars. Nor saving Banking Institutions which has failed the nation, and even after massive Bail -outs continue to function in a way not conducive to serving the nation.
He should NOT be responsible for distributing grants "willy - nilly" thro-out the world, when our own UK nationals and our own country’s finances are in chaos.

HOWEVER HE SHOULD BE - responsible for our elderly NOT having to live below the poverty line and once again survive a winter‘s cold - this time by having financing energy bills which have been allowed to escalate thro the ceiling

It should be remembered that The Democratic Government of the UK is “for the people, by the people” and administered collectively by a CABINET .. .. NOT BY ONE INDIVIDUAL -

A UK PM and Government should have EMPATHY with the PEOPLE they represent, and above all they should be honest and mindful of the needs of the nation first and foremost,

Finally one should use “WE” and not “I” if the respect of the "people" is to be appreciated

Face Surgery and Body Augmentation

Plastic facial surgery and lip, cheek and breast augmentation are becoming common place on TV . Whilst watching “Richard and Julie” recently, I noticed the obvious - Britt Ekland , one of their guests appeared to have a “TROUT LIPS” ( similar to those experienced by Leslie Ash). I am aware and realise that Lionel Blair has been sporting an example of a “facelift gone wrong“ for some time.

However, J K Rowling ( Harry Potter creator), T V’s Ann Robinson and Sherri Houston ( ex Coronation St, Emmerdale Farm and Loose Women) the latter “allegedly” from B J., although some do contend it is more like Gedling or Cartlton are much better examples of “Surgery/Body Augmentation“, although it must be said these three ladies in particular, are certainly in the minority.

Large Moon plus UFO ??!!

On Thursday afternoon about 3.30pm whilst driving back from Nottingham along the Colwick Bye pass, the Moon was low in the sky looking straight ahead toward B J, however its size appeared excessively large I remarked about this, for that it appeared to be coming directly and slowly towards us on earth. Its size was remarkably large, much larger, and very much clearer, more so than I had ever seen before

Atmospherics and moisture in the air I guessed was my solution in answer

( No! .. later we heard via the T V that the moon was now at it nearest position relative to the earth "in the last 30 years" and it would appeared 14% larger)

Later that evening, whilst at home (at a high spot) in B J. My wife was looking due west from the kitchen window when she noticed a significant bright light low in the sky somewhere over the M1 ( at a guess) . The light was very bright and constant ( no flashing navigation lights) with a slight red tinge to the top and a green tinge underneath.

The sky was totally clear at the time ( 6.30 ish ) with the complete absence of any stars. So inquisitive were we, we decided to use our high powered binoculars for a better view. Unfortunately this really did not provide an answer to our query.

The light remained in its position, never wavering - up, down, forward, backwards or sideways. During our sighting we did notice a Passenger Jet (presumably), passing at a similar height on its landing circuit path towards Castle Donnington, passing from right to left in the direction of the Ratcliffe Power station .

Shorly afterwards "our mystery lighted UFO" dissappeared completely .. ..

Incidentally I had previously seen this "mystery lighted UFO" about 6 months earlier in

exactly the same position - Huuummm .. .. very interesting ?!*

A "real" mans toy !

A Blast from the Past -

At this time of the year many of us spend a couple of moments to reminisce over the events of the last year.
-
I focused on my choice for "the event of the year right here in the 3 villages" - the Southwell Ploughing Match hosted by Bulcote Farm Estate - and what an event it proved to be !!.. .
-
Our villages 4000 population temporarily increased to over 12000 for this glorious late summers days spectacular - with a car park for 2000 + vehicles of every shape and size
-
The day was organised and staged with a professional expertise which would comfortably stand alongside the National Royal Agricultural Show - Yes really!
-
To the participants in the Main events, the Competitors in the Garden Produce Tent and Exhibitors all contributed to staging a most memorable day - I applaud you all, with thanks again for a "day to truly remember"

Techniques and skills of "Times Gone Bye" were exhibited and displayed - a real pleasure to see in the "flesh"

The car park then and now just 2/3 months later - a huge seeded field

The Main Ring then and now .. grazing once again

B J Village Centre Congestion

I have learned that the Authority has already considered and has responded to others who have raised a couple of the points I have covered below. The reply appears to be in the normal “Gobbledy Gook” language expected of those in the employment of an official Administration. The language as usual contains text which is pure “legislation speak” . What is wrong with "Plain English" and reasoned decisions based upon a flexibility and understanding which can be appreciated and understood by us "pure mortals"
-
We have numerous “peak-time” traffic problems in BJ village, with the intensity of private and commercial vehicles aggravating the existing difficulties and safety of pedestrians going about their everyday shopping and leisure activities
-
Within a few metres in any direction of the small Shopping Parade in Main Street are numerous pedestrian road crossing hazards
-
1)Pedestrians crossing the bottom junction of Padleys Lane in both directions,
2)Pedstrians crossing Main St, to and from the “Cross Keys” / the Co-op,
3)Pedestians crossing the road to and from the “Cross key” to The Charity Shop , Post Office , Chemist etc
4)Pedestrians crossing Main St diagonally to and from the Co-op Car park to the Post Office, Chemist etc
5)Pedestrians crossing the road at the bottom of Willow Wong in both directions
6)Pedestrians crossing to and from Main Street to Meadow Lane.
7)Pedestrians crossing Meadow Lane in both directions
8)Pedestrians crossing Main Street to and from the Post office to the Old School side
9)Pedestrians crossing Chestnut Grove from the Old School side to and from the Coop Food Store
10)Pedestrians crossing midway along Chestnut Grove to and from the Coop Food Store.. ..
11)Supplement the above dangerous crossings required by the pedestrians, with the further need for some villagers needing to access the one of the two scheduled Bus service Stops on either side of Main street a the continual mounting and dismounting of the “ to and from Nottingham service”. (particularly at school start and finish times)

Add to all the above facts that a major proportion of the village population is either young and elderly and that there is always a disproportionate number of cars use the above area within routine high peaks at regular daily periods and .. ..
-
.. ..there does exists a formula to ease the above for the events (a no parking village centre) which I am sure few of us want to consider for road side car parking would simply extend further out along Main street in both directions .. .. .

Trees devoid of festive decoration

Unkept Promises - Dont shoot the Messengers !

Evidently the BJPC placed the order and instruction with the Contractor for the Christmas decorations in the village centre to be installed on the 1st of December.

During my late morning walk today, into and thro the village, it was again evident that the installation was still delayed - What can any of us we do about it ?- Not a lot, other than rely upon the designated Contractor meeting their obligation as quickly as possible.

NEXT year, when awarding the contract for the installation of the Christmas decorations once again, we should recall the experience of THIS year together with the saying - "Once bitten twice shy .. "
-
Also during my walk this morning I once again saw what appeared to be some progress on the BJ Flood defense scheme. We shall see if this is the "final push" to the eventual completion of this project - remembering that this contract work commenced as long ago as February

Baaa - Humbug ! I recall there is a saying "You may be able to lead a horse to water.. .. but you cant make it drink !" ..

The beginnings of a beautiful day for BJ

GGooodd Moorrnniinngg - Bee Jay !!!!

What a beautiful and spectacular beginning to the day....

There has been a heavy frost during the night, accompanied by a cloudless sky, culminating with a such spectacular sunrise over the Vale of Belvior - it is a picture book start to the day for everyone, other that is other than the occassional Scrooge.

Today is good !!! So for a short time, put the your own troubles aside and loo for the good in everyone and everything. .. .. However none of us should forget those in the world much less fortunate than ourselves - there are far too many .. .. men, women and children of every class, colour and creed .. in too many far away places in the world .. but please dont forget the many much closer to home.

Well having got that off my chest .....Dont forget the annual village event of

"Carols around the Crib"

Saturday 20th December at 4.30 pm

Outside the Old school, Main Street

This event is for all ages and children should come dressed as shepards or angels

( and dont forget the Donkey !!! ;-) )

The event will be followed by refreshmants at the Methodist Church Hall

OK! Now having completed my only bit of seasonal propoganda, please help justify my effort by coming out in all your numbers and patronising the village seasonal event and get together, in the spirit intended

Dont forget.. .. Saturday the 20th December at 4.30pm - Village centre !!

I Learn today that the Village Christmas Lights should be installed TODAY. - HOO RAY! ;-)

Regretfully the Contractor's allowed the installation date to fall behind the agreed schedule ;-(

Burton Joyce and "TimeLine" Genealogy - Guest contribution

Researching and establishing family roots requires perseverance, patience, super human “stick ability” for the task in hand together with an acceptance of the fact that everything you discover or read may NOT be what you see at first, at a second or even the third look. Most of the time genealogy is not an exact science and even specialist computer programmes do not always clarify a situation (as the saying goes “feed in peanuts and you will get out monkeys” meaning that the quality of the information put out by the computer is determined by the quality of the information fed in.

In researching our own family name over many years , my cousin Peter (the family technocrat), developed a unique computer programme to digest the many 10.000’s of pieces of information and collate them intelligently by integrating the many variables of dates of births/baptisms, marriage dates/locations, death dates/locations, burial locations, surname spellings variable etc., etc.. Even so, there are still many loose ends which in the final analysis may well have to depend upon the deductive intuition of the human reasoning of social habits and attitudes to aid a resolution.

My understanding of my family ancestry has been assisted immensely by using the “Timeline”. I cannot overstress its use as an aid for a clearer understanding of the complexity with family relationships. .

An autumn morning in B J

"Eye" for a Bargain

I was in the car park of a local Food Supermarket ( one of the top 5) when I noticed a middle aged lady exiting with her shopping trolley, packed with 10 - Yes TEN, of the RE-USABLE type of particularly easily recognised “plastic orange livered” bags - full to overspilling

She then off loaded the bags onto the pavement outside and waited for her Taxi - booked to take her home ( presumably)

Nothing odd about this! You may say.

However this particular Food Supermarket Car Park was definitely NOT, the car park of the - original supplier of the “particularly easily recognised plastic orange livered” bags.

I guess the quality and price of the “plastic orange livered” bags. (used by the lady) is assessed ( by this middle aged women) as NOT replicated by the quality and price of the FOOD and PRODUCE purchaseable at the original supplier of the “particularly easily recognised “plastic orange livered” bags.

"Central santuary" on Church Road

ROAD FEAR?

The elderly, infirmed, and mothers with toddlers, must constantly feel at risk, most uncomfortable and vulnerable whilst walking along or crossing the Bye-Pass … (Church Road) on foot.

-
Even the mini "sanctuary islands", installed on Church Road , complete with bollards and tall “lolly pop” standards do not give any reassurance to pedestrians, particularly when we see the number of bollards repeatedly knocked over by the traffic and damaged beyond repair.

-
What is the MAIN FEAR - well in my mind, it has to be the huge multi wheeled Trucks , large articulated produce Delivery Vans, new / used car Transporters, “Chelsea-Tractors” and “Boy Racers” in high performance cars, which constantly motor along the road at just below or above the 30mph limit.

What is the PROBLEM - It is the number and size of huge vehicles passing thro the village, creating a frightening, most daunting SUCTION on all local pedestrians, particularly between the traffic lights at Chestnut Grove and Meadow Lane.

-
Any unfortunate individual caught waiting to cross the road, or at the worst trapped, on the "island sanctuary" midway across Church Road (at the Meadow Lane/Trent Lane junction) - whilst vehicles simultaneously pass by in both directions have to take what ever measures are available to them . I have seen elderly pedestrians stranded on the "island sanctuary" gripping the tall “lolly- pop” standard, for security, as if their life depended upon it -

My fear is that their life does depend on it !!..“gripping a lolly-pop - its suckions” ;-)

****The old BJ Vicarage once stood on the plot of land now occupied by 24 & 26 Main Street and the small bungalows on Tim Lane.

However, it was not considered fit for the Vicar to live in during John Rolleston’s incumbency (1882-63) and it was let to 3 families. --The Vicar moved to a house close by the Church. - Huummm ! very interesting

The Vicars in these early times had to be Farmers also - John Parker had eight cows, three beasts, five calves, five horse, eight pigs, and forty eight sheep also barley and peas - .. WoooOW!

In 1848 there were 7 shops in BJ incl William Harby - The Baker and Coal Dealer

2 others were sited side by side at the corner of Tim Lane and Main Street.

One was the business of Miss Swinscoe and the other Mrs Alvey,!!!

At the rear of Mrs Alveys shop was her husband’s Stocking making business.

Mrs Alvey was invariably seen with her head wrapped in red flannel

Stormy times ahead ?

Post Office - difficulties !

There appear to be stormy times ahead for Burton Joyce Post Office ..

Some of us may say- Can the situation get any worse ?

I have never seen the appearance of this classic establishment deteriate so much, in all of the 38 years I have lived in this village.

To see the premises in such a state, is deplorable - the R H window of its two large display windows is now almost entirely devoted to the display of an irregular "hotch potch" of personal and commercial adverts - providing revenue of the princely sum of just 50pence per week per display rental

The other window ( L H looking into the premises) has a significant and crudely "hand prepared" announcement

"Everything for sale - 50% off "

The inside of these premises is now so untidy, unattractive and lacking the selection of services and goods once available to the village residents in better times

This situation needs to show an improvement .. .. ..and quickly !

Parking on Pavements ( NOT a lady - this time ! ;-) )

Parking on Pavements - a misunderstanding ..Oh yes !If you believe that, you will believe anything-Why is it that some car drivers illegally park on pavements? - Oh is it "ILLEGAL" ?-

My guess is that this type of driver is somewhat frightened or apprehensive by the situation, for if they parked legally on the road, there is a chance that some other car driver may drive alongside and because of what they consider as a narrow gap in the road, may , in passing by scrape and damage their own parked vehicle.

Wow! What attitude?-

Is this really "ILLEGAL" - do not be misunderstanding of that fact-Not only do these individuals choose to park "illegally", they completely disregard the "right of the pedestrian". The pedestrian for whom the pavement exists, is entitled to free passage and how about considering those pedestrians who actually need safe passage via the pavement - which they are obstructing and on which they are "illegally" parking their car -

Question .. What are the pedestrians supposed to do in these circumstances? - The elderly ,the infirmed, the wheelchair users, the young Mums with her offspring and buggies ( I hate buggies), the individual who has difficulty walking and requires the use of a motorise scooter, which is NOT licensed for road use ( there are more and more of this type of independent, individual using scooters now a days, and good luck to them. Their scooter is more than a vehicle to be inconvenienced on the obstructed pavement, it is their means of bringing some quality and much appreciated independence to their lives). ????

Answer ..Not a lot really, other than squeezing by ( if possible) or taking a chance and stepping out into the road to get around the obstruction. However, what is the wheelchair and motorised scooters user supposed to do? ( hopefully they will have an umbrella - in case it rains),

.. ..and they should never leave home WITHOUT a packed lunch and i-pod, to help with passing the time, whilst waiting for the car owner to return ;-)

I make no apology for rabbiting on , about this subject, it annoys me unbelievably to see the unconcerned, uninterested, inconsiderate law breaking individual, flout the law, showing disrespect to the needs of others, many less fortunate than themselves. My own patience is pushed even further to the brink, when the "illegally" parked vehicle is also the fashionable “Chelsea Tractor 4X4”

Personally I would like to extend this grumble even more further to that particular inconsiderate individual who not only parks HER car on the pavement outside our home, but also aggravates further with partially parking across OUR drive entrance - really no joke!

However for those who transgress in B J, - beware .. .. my “ roving, contributing vigilante” insists that the majority the culprits for this type of illegal car parking are lady drivers -:-) noted by the “jottings” kept in the vigilante’s little black book and digital camera !!!!

( Note also! the use of the term .. lady - rather than the alternative, but less respectful .. “female“)-

"Finally! I am sure that these parking illegal practices are in no way malicious, they are simply the result of the lack of thought by the culprits, who consider it more important to ensure less inconvenience to themselves rather than others" ..

The village “Millennium Marker” is quite novel, attractive, not over stated, yet significant and memorable. The plaques mounted to the front of the “Marker” are most informative and relevant.

Whilst admiring once again the B J “Millennium“Marker” this last week (with an intention of creating a photographic record), a local mature couple from the village, ( I recognised them both together as being villagers of many years standing) came over and took-up a conversation me

“Very tasteful and relevant !” was their initial comment , .. .. ..

After a quiet moment or two .. .. the question arose

“ Why was there a need to add that small plaque on the back” ? -

Aah! Mmm! Yes! .. was the answer as I recall ..

It was suggested that a Time Capsule had been enclosed in the structure, did this contain a listing of ALL the residents in the three villages at the turn of the century ?

and the present level of water in the River Trent

Flood Defenses

On the 6/7th Sept and 3rd November I previously reported that the BJ Flood defence pumping station had still to be completed. - after the commencement of the work in February of this year

In the October issue of the Parish Magazine, Steve Wright’s contribution comments upon the report by the Environment Agency Flood Risk Management and their statement that at the time of going to print (which could be interpreted as the 16th Sept) “the work was nearing completion of the pumping station” and that “When all work is completed screening of the site will be carried out by planting suitable shrubbery”

-Well let me once again advise all in B J and the Agency itself, that work appears to have had NO significant moves towards completion, - as my new images show.

-With all the rain we have had this last year it makes me wonder if all the expense in the new , non-completed B J Pumping Station was really necessary. After all we have all seen "down pour, upon down pour" and "wide spread flooding" thro-out many areas in the country, but not here in B J this year .

Is it, that all the embarrassing and frenetic, renewed cleaning and clearing of the county's natural drainage ditches, dykes, becks etc (which have been in existance for years ) has been effective and had the result for which they were initially created for ? .. or have I missed something?

Burton Joyce in the 1600's

Shows a very small number of dwellings - however there was a church.This early map of BJ is one of Sherwood Forest dated 1609.

-
It shows BJ consists of Main St, Lambley Lane, and Meadow lane ( the eventual Old Road to Grimsby).

-
It does not show any trees, shrub land, coppices or woods, even though there is every possibility that the area was full of such foliage, even more so than it is today. ( the number of local coal mines are witness to the fact that the area has always been well forested)

-
About 35 houses were scattered around these roads and the population calculated from Baptisms, Hearth Tax and Visitation returns was about 145. Within possibly 35 families

Life generally in the period

Life in these times must have been very hard. No running water , no transport, no NHS, no flushing toilets, unmade roads and paths (becoming quagmires for most of the year), lack of sewage treatment, no schools, no shops as such , just the basics in food and drink , having to fetch water from streams or rivers in all weathers ( winter and summer - we know there was some running water for a “beck“ has always run off the hillside parallel to Lambley Lane and there was also a small “spring” at the east end of Main street.
-
No baths or showers, clothes worn day in and day out, very frequently a complete lack of shoes, no tea, coffee or soft drinks, access completely without lighting (gas lights came much later), the heating was probably one fire in the food area of a home, no duvets on the sleeping areas - probably just skins or straw, there was a complete lack of food choice- sometimes a complete lack of food? (“You have what you’ve got and that’s it.! “), possibly the occasional milk from a goat or a friends cow, berries, and fish caught in the river or rabbit ( when one was brave or desperate enough to ignore the consequences of being caught red-handed - “poaching?”), the odd rabbit or bird and eggs from the water fowl nests, etc. etc.. would have been luxury itself.

When the winds blow either from the South West or the North East, it can be quite “hairy” in BJ. The wind will find the easiest route and it will “howl” up/down the large gulley with its bridle-way which runs from BJ village up and over the escarpment to Lambley village. Tree damage was all too frequent an occurrence. These must have been just some of the downsides of life in the 1600’s

Another UFO ?

Did anyone see the Low flying bright trangular light passing over BJ from the NE to SW last night about 7.15pm .
-
The strange thing about this particular sighting, which appeared to be flying, soundlessly and relatively slowly over BJ village, Stoke Bardolph and then over the Trent towards Gamston, was that there were no intermittanat flashing navigation lights ( there was a totally constant yellow/orange bright light, similar to cabin lights, but much brighter).
-
At the same time as this "UFO" was in the sky there was also a passenger jet on an incoming circuit somewhere SW of Nottingham heading into Donnington. This object was not on any collision course and appear to take avasive action it just simply faded away somewhere in the Stanton in the Wolds area.

Funny what ?.. ..

Village centre congestion

“Manners maketh the man“ ! !-

A saw an nice act of respect and gallantry, by an elderly gentleman, in B J village centre the other day. There was a young mother having a little difficulty with her shopping and her youngster, probably 3 years old or so, crossing across a busy Main St.. There were several cars around and others parked nearby restricting all pedestrians vision. Plus a "Southwell bound" bus, parked and off loading passengers in front of the Post Office

-
This mature gentleman, who had just crossed Main St from the Co-op Car Park , realised the situation and immediately went to the lady's assistance - then taking the hand of the youngster he guided them both, back across the road, navigating the traffic which was passing both ways, and into the Co-op Car park (from where he had just come). He then crossed Main St for the third time, to get back on his own way to the Post office

- .. gallantry and consideration for others .. par excellance!

-
It was this example of courtesy and respect for others that prompted me to begin to compile a list both serious and amusing, which exemplifies just what makes someone a "Gentleman".

UFOs in Our AIRSPACE

This is one of my pet grumbles - Not UFOs as most individuals would imagine - however these flying objects are UFO's for they are unidentifieable as far as I am concerned, because unlike the regular and scheduled village bus service which I am aware of, these flying objects invading the village airspace are irregular, not scheduled and are random, yet too frequently and far too low and noisy for my liking. Has BJ become a Location/Directional Beacon or the air corridor for all flying objects east of Nottingham? Even as I write this report another helicopter passes from East to West directly overhead and so low a height I could shake hands with the pilot.

Some 2 years ago now I complained to the County Council and East Midlands Airport Authority about the intrusions into airspace not designated for commercial/passenger air traffic ( over BJ). The result of my complaint was .... complete silence ( denial?) from the E M Airport and some minor and ongoing noises as the result of an appointed meeting in the BJ Library with County Hall councillors).....

"What is your problem you may say.?" My problem is the possibility of a potential and significant Air over our village, which may be, or not, an officially designated or accepted air corridor for "Low Flying" passenger, private and military flights.

Looking into the sky from Burton Joyce it appears that many Passenger Jets now frequently take a landing circuit line over and down ( N to S) Shearing Hill, onto a course over the River Trent in the vicinity of the Ferry Boat Pub, then over Radcliffe and into the air space over Stanton/Keyworth and eventually onto Donnington ( EMA). The potential problem appears to peak at evening/holiday returns into EMA . Often simultaneous flights appear to be coming into the area from the South and into the airspace/junction which frequently has multiple and simultaneous returns from opposing directions, so much so that many deviations to a normal incoming flight paths are deviated in the final stages of their standard landing approach ...........We have actually had large Passenger Jets pass really low over our home ( usually in the late Autumn and around 10.00pm <12.00.)>

The number of noisy low flying helicopters has increased tremendously over the last year (Police, Ambulance, Channook military etc, private - small and large) with passes both E to W and W to E. Even the RAF uses the air space with Euro Fighter passes - day and night, at a great height (still unbelievably noisy). I regularly see AWACs passing over south of the village, E to W and vice versa, and Yes! - the "Red Arrows" use the Trent Valley for low passes occasionally These are supplemented with regular and frequent trainee pilot flights (from Cranwell ?). Finally high altitude passenger jets have daily N bound corriders on either side of the area - (dumping W C waste in the process I presume?)

Oh!. and to cap it all, I should also add, that, just over a year ago, whilst up on our roof at night star gazing, we saw the brightly lit SPACE CENTRE and the equally lit bright USA SPACE SHUTTLE chasing it - it appeared high over BJ, travelling from NW. to SE. at approx 10.40pm. So now NASA is now on the scene. It is no joke I assure you. :-) (Yes the possible sighting had been publicised earlier in the day on the Local TV News programme )

B J Donkeys

"B J. DONKEYS "- ALIVE & WELL ..Hip! Hip! Hurrah !

Some 18 months or so ago the two donkeys pastured in the land/garden at the Bulcote end of Criftin Road were "Dangerously overweight" re- the local Vet .

The remidy suggested was on a typed Notice attached to a tree overlooking the Allotment Holders/Walkers Car Park.

The text of the Notice kindly requested that,- "as the overfeeding of the donkeys had resulted in them becoming "Dangerously overweight". It would be kinder if the generous feeding by passers by and onlookers was restricted to one apple or two carrots"..!!.

As the image shows the requested remedial feeding regime has been successful......

-Hurray !! and please may it continue .. .. .

It is a fact that quite frequently, as we all get older, we find we become less mobile and lack the personal " get-up and go" to socialise with others of our generation. We loose contact and become more isolated and withdraw within ourselves. A regular "Click Chat" on this website will begin to change this frame of mind and help with making new friends and socialising again.

“Burton Joyce Online” can in fact “kick start" a new and enjoyable interest in your life, more so for those who are house bound and less mobile. Of course a computer and internet service is vital to Click Chat, however, for those who are mobile there is always the free access to computers and the internet (together with instruction) at the B J Library in Meadow Lane. For the others less fortunate amongst us, we shall have to attempt to remidy the situation somehow

The Village Eyesore

After reporting on unsightly Graffiti "presumably the work of the village youth". I must add balance and report again on this eyesore within the village centre which without presumption is the work (or lack of) the village adults.

***On Thursday 20th November I reported again on this continuing mess. (the previously named “Burton Joyce Blog“.) .. So without apologises here it is once again.. ..

When will those responsible for the upkeep of this patch take the “bull by the horns” and get this unsightly mess in the centre of the village tidied up and “in keeping” with the preferred appearance of our village -
-Shame on you who have responsibility for this “oversight“.

Shame on those who have accountability for ensuring and maintaining a tidy and attractive village .Once again is this the attitude which contributes to why we did not win an Attractive Village Award this year?

Why must we accept that this particular area in our village centre be allowed to remain in this untidy, overgrown, eye sore condition for such an extended period ?.

Why should this situation be allowed to exist? Particularly as the BCTV is located in the Village Old School alongside.

PERHAPS IT NEEDS SOMEONE WITH INITIATIVE ? Oh dear me! Initiative appears to be in short supply of late .. .. ..

Re: The unsightly and unhealthy mess in the Village Centre.I agree it is a mess and the Parish Council should have done something about it long ago. A while ago I saw a dead RAT in the gutter near the Old School. Certainly road kill, but I wonder where it came from?The 'mess' is next to the Church Hall where a playgroup meets regularly. I bet quite a few people would be disturbed it they thought their child was playing on the drive up to the hall whilst RATS were playing nearby !!!The Conservationalists need to look in their own back yard!

B J Graffiti

I have reported previously on the above example of graffiti in Burton Joyce. However, my report dated Monday 24th persuades me to record once again.

Now whilst I cannot approve of this irresponsible “Street Art" , I can, and often appreciate the skill and content of many “un-authorised artistic displays”

The image above is an example of artwork which in my mind enhances and is not "out of place" in its present location, nor does it offend me personally. I would hope that permission was sought and given prior to starting this work. (probably NOT! - if so this is yet another un-authorised graffiti)

As a community, we do not provide an area locally, where "Street Artists" can develop their skills and artistic interpretations in a responsible manner.. .. Should we as a community try to provide an acceptable, none offending location for this particular activity ? .. .. Yes ! Most certainly, and I will personally champion the cause, providing the “B J Street Artists and Graffiti activists”, act collectively, with due consideration, for the village in which they live

Deliberate irresponsibility, stupidly destructive and costly anti-social behavior

I had planned to make this initial chronicle of my "Blog renaming and relaunch" with the announcement of the establishment of a positive relationship with both the "Burton Joyce Residents Association" and the "Burton Joyce Parish Council"

Instead I have to report an example of unacceptable, untalented, distateful, distructive graffiti.. ..

NOT the creative type of graffiti I have publicised in in a past for I will continue to champion the cause for an appropriate "Set-Aside Area" which allows for the free expression of "Street Art"

I was sent the above image this morning by the B J R A . It illustrates vividly the thoughtless untalented, unacceptable graffiti sprayed onto a brand new £150+ sign. Situated at THE GROVE, - This is the area already designated and actioned by the B J P C for improvement and regeneratiion as a recreational/leisure facility for ALL the village residents

Now as a direct result of this thoughtless stupidity ALL B J residents will suffer, for not only does it ruin the environment, it also costs a fortune to clean up with a cost which will have to be deducted from the planned Village amenity expenditure

Someday, someone, may be able to explain to me precisely what satisfaction these malicious acts give to the individuals who have a free choice to behave in this manner, and just as importantly exactly what type of home and family does this individual come from ?

Welcome everyone

This is the new home of the "Burton Joyce Blog" now renamed as "Burton Joyce Online"

The reasoning behind this renaming and new address, is to redress some of the problems I have personally encountered with the hesitation of the majority of my fellow villagers. The obvious hesitation in being prepared or wanting to understand and be attracted to the experience and ethos offered with the embracing of the internet ( this is especially evident with the more mature villagers ).

This was the main difficulty I encountered with my initial exposure of the blog. Possibly the word "Blog" was also somewhat confusing to our rural population, ( approx 4000 - with 41% being classed as "mature" and 31% actually genuine "senior citizens" )

Personally, because our community has these percentages, is precisly the reason why I am championing the cause - BURTON JOYCE ONLINE - a "WIN-WIN" situation for everyone. This instant communication can provide so many benefits for everyone in our community. Thro from social contact and communication, personal awareness of local administration and services availabilty, plus a direct line for everyone to interchange suggestions, discussion and debate etc, with the ultimate aim integrating an improvement to our village life..

So come on each and everyone of you "Burton Joyceonians" join in the "cause" and embrace the Internet and e mailing for you will inevitably experience a gratification and satisfaction greater than you can ever imagine, particularly .. .. .,

If you have a desire or need to "see and talk"- "pass on village news" with your family or friends -from your own home to almost anywhere in the world
